Statutory speed limit (hōtei sokudo)

Definition
The hōtei sokudo is the speed limit set by law that applies when no sign posts a different limit. On ordinary roads (not expressway main lanes), the statutory maximum for a car is 60 km/h. Where a sign shows a lower limit (the 'designated' limit), the sign wins.
On the test
True/false example: "On roads other than expressway main lanes, the statutory maximum speed for a car is 60 km/h." — True. But remember a posted sign can set a lower limit, which then applies instead.
The law behind it
The Order for Enforcement of the Road Traffic Act, Article 11, sets the statutory maximum for cars at 60 km/h on ordinary roads. A road sign can post a different (designated) limit that overrides it.
