Definition
Karimen (short for kari-menkyo, provisional licence) is the first stage of the normal Japanese licensing path. You pass a 50-question written test (90% to pass, 30 minutes) and a driving-course test, which lets you practise on public roads with a qualified supervisor before the full licence.

Common question: How many questions is the karimen written test? — 50 questions, and you need 45 correct (90%) in 30 minutes. There are no illustration questions at this stage.

Prefectural police publish the format: the provisional-licence written test is 50 questions with a 90% pass mark, done in 30 minutes.
