Explanation
Article 63-7(1) of the Road Traffic Act states that if a bicycle crossing (jitensha-oudantai) exists at or near the intersection, the cyclist must ride across it, overriding the general rules on how to pass through intersections. Note that this is not the same as a bicycle lane running along the roadway: it is a striped band painted across the road for bicycles to cross on. Using it is an obligation, not an option.
